This up-to-date textbook is designed for use by professors and lecturers teaching undergraduate courses in management, MBA programs, Executive programs and related business fields. Principles of Management blends traditional concepts and models of management with some contemporary twists, including a chapter devoted to Islamic management. Students will also like the authors’ use of examples and illustrations from management practices by international as well as local companies. In this second edition of Principles the authors provide even more student-friendly graphs, charts, tables and exhibits, as well as helpful lists of key terms and discussion questions following each chapter.

The book’s authors include faculty members from both public and private universities across Malaysia, many of whom have written extensively in business and related fields. They teach business management courses, and tailor the text for today’s students, taking into consideration their ethnic diversity as well as their academic and career interests.

About the Authors

William G. “Bill” Borges

William G. “Bill” Borges completed his Ph.D. in political science at the University of California-Riverside in 1980. His research specialties include public policy, business ethics, and the politics of banking and finance. He has been a professor at HELP University since 2018.

From 2012-2015 Borges was a professor at Putra Business School, Malaysia. He has also served on the faculties of INTI University, Taylor’s University, and Southwest Minnesota State University from 1989-2007, where he was also Dean of the College of Professional Studies from 1996-2000 and Vice-President for Graduate and International Programs from 1998-2000. Additionally, Borges has taught at San Jose State University (California), Pensacola Christian College (Florida) Southwestern University (Texas) and Mara Institute of Technology (Shah Alam, Malaysia).

Professor Borges is co-author of the book Saving the Savings and Loan, published by Praeger Press in 1989. The book chronicles the U.S. and Texas savings and loan crisis of the 1980s. Borges is also the main author of Principles of Management (2015--1st edition), Organizational Behavior (2018) and Business Research Methods 2nd edition (2020). He is also the editor of Economics (2016--2nd edition) and Principles of Economics (2019).

Borges is also the author of hundreds of columns and articles covering politics, law, finance and business. His columns have been published in the Los Angeles Times, San Jose Mercury, San Francisco Examiner, and, in Malaysia, The Edge, New Straits Times, The Sun, Accountants Today, and Marketeer. Additionally, Borges has published several articles in the Asian Journal of Case Research, where he also served as Deputy Editor.

On several occasions Borges was honored as “Outstanding Professor” at SMSU, and was voted by students of INTI University their “Most Punctual” and “Strictest” faculty member.

Borges was born in Los Angeles, California, and is married with two children. He is a permanent resident of Malaysia, where he has resided since 1999.

Lee Sai Leong
Lee Sai Leong holds a PhD (IT) from University of Malaya. He has more than 20 years teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has taught many subjects during this time such as management information systems, management and statistics. His last teaching position was as senior lecturer at the Faculty of Business and Accountancy, University of Malaya. His research interests are in information technology and business management.
Dr. Nagiah Ramasamy

Dr. Nagiah Ramasamy holds a PhD in Management (HRM) from Universiti Putra Malaysia. He has an MA (HRM) from the University of Humberside (UK), a Post-Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice from Lancaster University (UK), and a BA (Hons) in Business Administration from the University of Bolton (UK). He was awarded recognition as a Certified Talent Development Manager by the Malaysian Institute of Human Resource Management.

Dr Nagiah has varied work experiences spanning almost 40 years, in both the manufacturing and education sectors. His work has taken him to places such as Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Hong Kong, India, Nepal, Australia, the UK, France and Belgium. He has served as an adjunct faculty member and an external examiner to foreign universities, and is currently the Industrial Relations Advisor at the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) and the National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE). Prior to this he was an Associate Professor at Sunway University Business School. Dr. Nagiah is a Fellow of both the Chartered Management Institute (UK) and the Higher Education Academy (UK). He is also an Exco Member of the Malaysian Society of Labour and Social Security Law (MSLSSL).

Dr. Nagiah, who has strong research interests in the field of employment relations, has presented papers and published a number of articles, book chapters and books, both locally and overseas. He is often invited as a speaker at various forums.

Shishi Kumar Piaralal
Shishi Kumar Piaralal is a Senior Lecturer in Marketing and the coordinator for Master of Business Administration at OUM Business School, Open University Malaysia. He holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Science Malaysia. He previously held Joint Head of Postgraduate in the Centre of Postgraduate Studies & Professional Development for Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, Malaysia. His industrial experience was with Marconi Malaysia and Ericsson Malaysia over 13 years. His research interest includes service recovery, customer loyalty, supply chain management and entrepreneurship. His major areas of teaching include Marketing, Management, New Venture Development and Entrepreneurship.
Prof. Dr Mohd Nazari Ismail

Prof. Dr Mohd Nazari Ismail' secondary school education was at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar. He studied for his `A’ Levels at Poole College of Further Education, England and subsequently obtained his B.Sc. Economics (Hon.) from the University of Wales, U. Kingdom, an MBA from the State University of New York, USA and a Ph.D from the Manchester Business School, U. Kingdom.

Currently he is a Professor and also the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Accounting, University of Malaya. He has published numerous articles in local and international journals and has also authored four books:

He has also consulted as well as provided training programs to a number of public and private sector organizations including The Prime Minister’s Department of Malaysia, Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka, Proton, Matsushita, The Royal Malaysian Police, and the Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.

He was the 1999 Fulbright Foundation Malaysian Scholar at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA and also the Fulbright Visiting Specialist at Pfeiffer University, North Carolina, USA in 2005. In June 2005, he was a visiting fellow at Oxford Center for Islamic Studies, Oxford, United Kingdom. He was also previously the Head of the Strategic Planning and Development Unit of the University of Malaya and the Head of the Department of Business Policy and Strategy, Faculty of Business and Accounting, University of Malaya.

Koon Vui Yee

Koon Vui Yee is a Senior Lecturer in the Sunway University Business School at Sunway University, Malaysia. She obtained her PhD in Business Administration from Asia e-University’s School of Graduate Studies, received her Master of Management with distinction from University Malaya, and her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Universiti Putra Malaysia.

She has taught strategic human resource management, management principles, industrial organizational psychology, strategic management, and compensation to undergraduate students. Dr. Koon’s has published numerous articles and book chapters; her research interests include human resource management and humanistic management. She also supervises several MBA and PhD candidates.

Shahrol Aman Ahmad

Shahrol Aman Ahmad holds a Certificate in Education from Teachers College Kota Bharu, Kelantan, a Bachelor of Business Administration with honors from Universiti Utara Malaysia, and a Master of Science in Management from Universiti Utara Malaysia. He was a teacher at Tun Saban, in Pengkalan Hulu Perak for five years and a lecturer at Universiti Utara Malaysia Matriculation Centre for five years.

He served as course coordinator for Introduction to Management in the College of Business and Chairman of the Department of Business Management for the Faculty of Business Management, Universiti Utara Malaysia. Shahrol currently is attached to the UUM College of Arts and Sciences under School of Languages, Civilisation & Philosophy, where he teaches Malaysian Nationhood Studies and Introduction to Philosophy and Introduction to Business. Shahrol is one of the authors of the textbook Introduction to Management for the Open University of Malaysia, Introduction to Management by McGraw Hill, and the latest Introduction to Management textbook by Pearson.

Ang Eng Sieng

Ang Eng Sieng is a senior lecturer at Help University. Her teaching and research interests include Human Resource Management, Managing Change and Organizational Behavior.

Eng Sieng’s background includes work as tutor, trainer, consultant and lecturer. Eng Sieng stays active as a Human Resource Management strategist. Her experience includes international teaching assignments in Vietnam, India, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Raja Nerina Raja Yusof

Raja Nerina Raja Yusof is an Associate Professor in the School of Business and Economics, Universiti Putra Malaysia, where she started her career as a Tutor for the faculty in 2000. She received her PhD in Management from the University of Otago, New Zealand. Her research interests include International Business Management, focusing on multinational corporations, Islamic (halal) business practices, cross-cultural management and international marketing. She teaches Principles of Management, International Business, and Entrepreneurship courses at UPM. Dr. Raja Nerina also serves as an Associate Editor for the Asian Journal of Case Research (AJCR) and has written numerous cases for journals and case books.

She also engages in external case study consultations for organizations such as CEDAR (SME Bank) and Lembaga Tabung Haji (Pilgrims Fund Board), and has authored and co-authored several books and journal articles focused on halal management and international business.

Dr. Sreenivasan Jayashree

Dr. Sreenivasan Jayashree holds a PhD in Management (TQM) and an MA (Public Administration) from the University of Madras. Dr. Jayashree has wide experiences and expertise in handling several management subjects like Strategic Management, General Management, Cross Cultural Management, Global Management and Research Methodology for Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. She has widely published in many international Journals and Conference proceedings.

She has published books and book chapters. She has secured many national grants and her research interests are in the area of waste management, Environmental studies, Knowledge management, Quality management and tourism.

Dr. Mohammad Nizam Sarkawi

Dr. Mohammad Nizam Sarkawi was certified in 1995 at the Institut Teknologi MARA in Terengganu under the Faculty of Hotel Management and Tourism. He also holds a Cambridge Information Technology Certificate from the University of Cambridge.

In 1997, Dr. Sarkawi began pursuing his Diploma in Business Management at Universiti Tun Abdul Razak in Johor. He also received a BSc in Human Resource Development at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, a master's degree in entrepreneurship at Universiti Teknologi MARA in Johor Bahru, and a PhD in Human Capital at Open University in Kuala Lumpur.

From 1992-1994, Sarkawi served on a Crew at a fast-food restaurant in Brunei Darussalam, before returning to Malaysia, where he worked as an Administrative Assistant in an international insurance company, a Sales Executive in chemical solvents, Assistant Manager at a local bank. and Assistant Branch Manager at an international bank. He then assumed the position of Chief Executive at a private higher learning institution before becoming a Regional Manager in an airline company from 2011 to 2015. Currently Dr Sarkawi serves as a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Utara Malaysia in Kedah.

Seth J. Borges
Seth J. Borges graduated from Northwood University in 2014 with a double major in International Business and Management, and is currently working on his Master of Business Administration degree through Western Governors University, USA. His studies focus on sales, customer service, and worker empowerment. Currently he is employed by Enterprise Holdings.
